Intercultural Relationships

My-Big-Fat-Greek-Wedding

Considering ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ as well as your own personal examples, post your answer to this question:  “What kinds of problems could arise from cultural differences when dating or marrying someone from different culture?”

I personally think that intercultural relationships are very beautiful because i found “atractive” that mixture of cultures, but I do think that intercultural relationships have sometimes difficulties. For example, like we see in the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” the family and their opinion and behaviors can represent a problem in a intercultural relationship; religion can also be a problem, for example in the moment of the wedding. In general, behaviors, hobbies, habits, food and sometime language can be a problem or obstacle in these relationships.
But the most important thing, I think, is when the couple want the things to work out, because if you want something happen, then you try to make it happen.

Palenque

Comparisson and contrast between the type of music and dance in Palenque and in the Alvin Ailey dance company

I think Palenque type of music and dance and The Alvin dance are very similar. In both we can see the importance of the movements, because those dances use the body as a form of communication, a form of expression. In Palenque and Alvin Ailey, dances and music are used to express a form of cultures, beliefs, behaviors, arts, feelings, etc.

It is interesting to see how these dances can express a lot just with the body, the movements can tell us history. I bet these dances can mix and it would be almost the same.

Holidays in Other Countries

How and why English was used on these sites. What did you learn from them?

On these web sites English as an universal language  is used to explain and present to all readers facts and interesting things about other cultures- Guatemala, Thailand, Phalgun Purnima and Peru-, because this language is known almost by everybody.

From these sites I learned how other cultures celebrate Holydays, for example in Peru traditionally some families go to mass at 10:00 pm on the 24th,  so dinner is served at midnight, which is almost the same here in Colombia. In Thailand Sawadee Pii May means “Happy New Year!”. In Phalgun Purnima  Holi celebration begins with lighting up of bonfire on the Holi eve. And in Guatemala hundreds of adults and children are staying up all night or waking up early to work on street “alfombras,” in preparation for Holy Week processions.

Personal Culture

I n my own experience music and hobbies has shaped my own personal culture, I don´t practice a sport so that does´t shape my culture. But in the case of hobby I have an example, I love to read, especially romantic novels, and when I started reading “Twilight Saga” I met people who love that saga too, and we shared a lot of things, we started talking in a way we only understand (nobody else), we started listening to a specific type of music, etc. Now I can say I that reading that book change a little part of myself, now I love to read novels – before Twiligh I didn´read anything- and it is a thing that will always stay with me.

Economic Empowerment for Women

Personally I would lend the money to Ericka Patricia, because she has already a plan, how to invert, how to offer better prices to people, how to get discounts, etc. And that bussiness (ice cream, candies) is very popular here in Barranquilla. Althoug her loan she is asking for is low, her ideas and ways to use the money are very smart.

Kenyan Matatu Drivers

Image
1. How are matatu drivers treated in his experience with the BBC?

Matatu drivers were treated like criminals, the police did not believe what they said because of the stereotype that Matatu drivers are dangerous and corrupt people and the black sheeps of their country.

2. Do Barranquilleros have the same negative opinion of mototaxistas as the Kenyans have of matatu drivers?

Usually we have a negative opinion about mototaxistas because we think they are robbers, because most of the time robbers use motorcycles to get fast to the victim, rob him and go away quickly. The truth is, we don´t know who is working honestly and who is a robber, so people use to feel a little bit insecure around mototaxistas, but not all of them are bad people, many of them work honestly to survive and maintain their families.

Afrocolombians

I think no matter your culture, behavior, sexuality and color is, we all are humans and we deserve to be recognized like that. It is sad that some people are being discriminated by other ones just because the color of their skin, we are in 21 century, and discriminatory words and acts don´t have space in our world

Favorite Carnival Moments

Image

My favorite carnivals moments are: Garabato del Country, La Guacherna and La Batalla de flores.

Those are my favorite moments because, first of all: I can share with my friends and family and we can have a good time. Secondly, I love to see the customes, the parades, people, dancings, etc. because all of that represent my culture, who I am and where I come from.

In general, I love my carnival because we can get messy, crazy and wild, enjoying with my family and friends and living our culture… what makes us unique.

Tinariwen

 1. What do we learn about Tuareg culture from this video?
I learn about their music… the sound is very relaxing and calm, and I really like it; I also learn  how they make tea… wich is a  very interesting and long process. The song also makes me understand how their language sounds.
 2. Keeping in mind what you learned from this interview, how does seeing the visuals within the video and knowing the meaning of the lyrics give us a deeper understanding of Tuareg culture?
Because, when we see them making tea, singing, etc. we realized how are they, how is their culture, how they act… and like I said before, listening to their language and knowing the meaning, allow us to understand better, their feelings, and culture in general. We can transport and “live” their lives and their culture.

Barranquilla was chosen because like Aliff Siman (the president of the organization) said, he was impressed about  the cohesion about culture, also because it was a very positive city with a international projection.

2. Will Barranquilla receive any of the economic benefits Liverpool hoped to from being named a cultural capital?

Well, this appreciation will let the city promote internationally through agreements that bureau has with the channels Antena 3 Spain and Discovery network
